To the editor:
I am a Lenox-based painter with work in the permanent collections of several major museums. I have placed my paintings in these museums with the understanding that they will be available to the public and preserved. I shudder at the thought that they would be treated as a commodity and auctioned off to the highest bidder. I shudder at the thought that a private collector would end up with these paintings, making them unavailable to the public. I would feel betrayed. I speak for a lot of artists when I say this.
Ethics are being challenged in this period of American history. This is certainly not a time for our Berkshire Museum to breach any ethical code.
