To the editor:
"Change is the only law of life and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future" — John F. Kennedy.
Van Shields, his staff and board have envisioned the future of the Berkshire Museum by respecting the past, living in the present and imagining the future. Their careful, thoughtful and collaborative approach to the museum's next 100 years will give Pittsfield and the Berkshires a place for children of all ages to learn, experience and dream.
I have been a visitor to the Berkshires for nearly 40 years and a part-time resident for six. The Berkshire Museum was a rainy day haven for my daughter and will now continue to thrill and challenge her children. I can only imagine the joy that it will give to the thousands of other children and their parents who visit every year.
This courageous decision to remake a beloved institution deserves our applause and support.
