To the editor:

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of John "Jack" Spencer early Sunday morning (Eagle, Feb. 22.) Known and beloved by so many in the Stockbridge community (and beyond), Jack was a longtime and devoted friend and supporter of the Stockbridge Library, Museum & Archives. He was an active participant on our book selection committee, twice served as president of the Library's board of trustees; hired our curator, Barbara Allen; and participated on the interview panel that hired me. He worked ardently to raise the funds needed to bring the area housing the historical collection up to modern museum standards in 2003, and again rallied for the library as part of our capital campaign committee for the library's 2016 renovation.

While I only had the privilege of knowing Jack for five years, far less than most in this town, it was plain to see from the start what a special and honorable man he was, a man who cared deeply about the people around him, be it his family, friends, students, or neighbors. Here at the library, we will forever be indebted to him for sharing his commitment to and enthusiasm for learning, books, and history with us. Jack Spencer represented the very best of us and will be sorely missed.

Katherine O'Neil,

The writer is director of the Stockbridge Library, Museum & Archives.
