PITTSFIELD — A city couple is being held without bail for allegedly trafficking nearly 50 grams of methamphetamine into the Berkshires.

Frankie New, 47, and his girlfriend, Leeann Otazo, 43, were arrested Sunday based on a tip that they were on their way back from Louisiana by bus with a large amount of crystal meth to sell.

After they arrived at the bus terminal about 5:25 p.m., police conducted a pat-frisk of Otazo and discovered about 48 grams of what is believed to be crystal meth, police said. New resisted being taken into custody.

In court files, police said because methamphetamine is relatively rare in Berkshire County, an estimate of the street value of those drugs was not immediately available.

Otazo and New pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Monday to charges of trafficking in methamphetamine between 36 and 100 grams and conspiracy.

New also faces a charge of resisting arrest; he also was arrested on a warrant connected to an open motor vehicle larceny case from September.

Judge Mark Pasquariello ordered them held pending dangerousness hearings Monday.
