Second new hotel, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, opens in Williamstown

The Fairfield Inn & Suites is now open in Williamstown. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019.

WILLIAMSTOWN — After several delays, the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott finally opened for business last week.

The 94-room facility at 430 Main St. had been scheduled to open in June, but was delayed by several construction setbacks and Occupational Safety and Health Administration violations.

Navin Shah, owner of the Fairfield Inn project and owner of Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge in Lenox and the Holiday Inn Express in Great Barrington, previously had estimated the cost of the Fairfield Inn project at about $10 million to $12 million.

The new building has a total floor area of about 53,000 square feet and is 35 feet high. Work on the three-story hotel started in September 2017 with the demolition of the office building that used to stand there.

The Fairfield Inn & Suites operates as a Marriott franchise, owned and managed by Shah's Berkshire Hotels Group.

It is the second new hotel to open in Williamstown this year. The new $32 million Williams Inn — it is owned by Williams College — opened in August, after the former inn closed in July. The Williams Inn now has 64 rooms, while the old inn had 125.

Between the two new hotels, Williamstown experienced a net gain of 33 hotel rooms.

The Williams Inn and the Fairfield are close to cultural attractions such as the Clark Art Institute, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

The hotel sports a newly launched decor package with simple nods to the brand's Fairfield Farm heritage. Specific elements meant to evoke feelings from the farm include a farmhouse table in the lobby for gathering and connecting, and photography from the Fairfield Farm serving as artwork in the lobby and guest rooms.

Besides new beds, the new guest rooms feature a modern lounge chair, a mobile desk, a couch, refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave.

Additional amenities include an indoor swimming pool, a fitness center, a courtyard with a fire pit, valet laundry service, complimentary Wi-Fi, business services and 550 square feet of meeting space to accommodate functions of up to 35 people. A complimentary hot breakfast featuring oatmeal, scrambled eggs, sausage, make-your-own waffles and other healthy items, such as fruit, yogurt, and whole grain cereals and breads, is available.
