SHEFFIELD — A student has admitted to scrawling a bomb threat on a bathroom wall Tuesday at Mount Everett Regional School.

Another student reported the threat, prompting an immediate investigation by the school resource officer, who deemed the threat a hoax.

The student responsible will be disciplined, according to an email sent to the school community at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday by Superintendent Beth Regulbuto.

It's not clear how the investigation led to the admission by the student, who has not been identified.

In the email, Regulbuto said school safety protocols were followed, and with no safety risk present, an evacuation was unnecessary. There was no other disruption to the school day.

"The investigation concluded this was a low level threat," she wrote. "There was no actual device present, there was no safety risk to students, faculty, or staff, and there was no disruption or change to the regular school day."

It is unclear whether local police were called or made aware of the incident.

Sheffield Police Chief Eric Munson III could not be reached Wednesday.

But Regulbuto, in an emailed statement, said she works closely with local police on all matters of school safety.

"Together, we have established safety protocols in place to address threats to the school community, and these protocols were followed during this incident," she wrote. "After immediate investigation of [Tuesday's] incident, it was determined that there was no credible threat of harm and that a schoolwide evacuation was not appropriate."

Regulbuto said that she could not share the specifics of crisis protocols because doing so could compromise safety. The school's handbook says that the need to evacuate the school before closing time "could arise in the event of a relatively minor incident such as a power failure, or from a major event, such as fire or a bomb threat."Last December, the school was evacuated for a similar bomb threat, and the student was disciplined.
