Two people were arrested Friday in connection with an armed robbery at Angelina's Sub Shop on West Housatonic Street, according to Pittsfield police.
Police are also investigating whether the pair was involved in a string of other robberies that have taken place in the last several weeks.
Jameial Beckett, 35 and Ivelisse Ruusukallio, 37, were both arrested on a charge of armed robbery while masked and are being held on bail until their arraignment at Central Berkshire District Court on Monday, Lt. Jeffrey Bradford said.
Around 9:38 p.m. Friday, an employee at the sub shop called police to report he had been robbed by a black man who brandished a gun and was wearing a dark colored hoodie and mask.
Only 30 minutes earlier, officers had responded to the Big Y Express at 202 West St. for a report that an individual, wearing a mask, had briefly entered the store and then left after appearing to be "spooked" by arriving customers, Bradford said.
Due to the investigation into the incident at Big Y Express and several other recent armed robberies in the city, numerous uniformed officers and plainclothes detectives were already in the area at the time of the Angelina's robbery.
While searching the area, a detective observed Beckett and Ruusukallio walking on a street just north of Angelina's and discovered evidence linking them to the robbery, Bradford said in a statement. He did not identify what the evidence was.
Additional evidence was discovered overnight and Saturday morning, he said.
At 11 p.m. Friday, several plainclothes officers remained on West Housatonic Street, searching the area with flashlights. Cruisers dotted the area.
Angelina's was open for business as usual on Saturday.
Beckett is being held at the Pittsfield Police Department on $7,500 bail and Ruusukallio on $2,500 bail.
The Pittsfield Police Detective Bureau is investigating whether Beckett and Ruusukallio are connected to a string of other robberies that have taken place at other businesses in recent weeks.
On Dec. 18 the Family Dollar at 631 North St. was robbed by someone who showed a "partially obscured gun." The following day there was another armed robbery at Angelina's Submarine Shop on Wahconah Street.
No one was injured in any of the robberies.
Police asked that anyone with information about the robberies call detectives at 413-448-9705.
