WEST STOCKBRIDGE — The town collector will be taking the West Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club property Friday because of nonpayment of about $49,500 in taxes.
The club, which was founded in 1972 on Sporstman Club Lane off Main Alford Road, has been defunct for years. The corporation that owned the club, the West Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club Inc., was dissolved in 2012. Contact information for the club's last president, Brian Zancanato, could not be found.
Town Collector June Biggs will take the property for West Stockbridge on Friday morning so that the town can sell the parcel and recoup the lost tax revenue. The West Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club owes $49,583 in taxes stretching to 2005, when the club's payment fell $127.90 short. The West Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club did not pay its full share of annual town taxes for 2009-2012 and 2014-2018, according to a public notice about the taking.
Robert McDermott, president of the Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club, which is not affiliated with the West Stockbridge group, said he remembers the West Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club as more of a social space than a place for recreation.
"The property is along the river," McDermott said. "I'm sure they'll have no problem selling it."
The West Stockbridge Sportsmen's Club property is valued at $285,500 by town assessors and contains 5 acres and two structures. The last time the parcel was sold was in 1972, for $1,500.
