“Baseball is such a metaphor for people’s dreams anyway. But a guy who throws only one pitch in the major leagues then his life spirals down into despair – it’s a metaphor on top of a metaphor.” – Dialogue from "The Pitch," a dramatic 90-minute play that will have a six-week, world premiere run at an equity theater in Massachusetts this winter, will be coming to the Next Stage Arts Project here May 8, 9 and 10 as its first stop on a tour of New England.

Written by a former newspaper reporter, Stan Freeman, the play is about a retired sportswriter who reluctantly agrees to collaborate with a young sportswriter on a biography of a recently deceased, boyhood friend of the older writer. The friend was an obscure pitcher who threw only one pitch in the major leagues for the New York Yankees nearly fifty years earlier but whose life turned tragic once he was out of baseball. However, it soon becomes evident there’s a secret at the heart of the pitcher’s story––one the older writer fiercely intends to protect. While the play is set against the backdrop of baseball, it is more concerned with generational differences and ethics as well as life decisions and their consequences. So it should appeal to women as much as to men.
