In the early morning of May 8, 1979, fire swept through the Kennedy Block and nearby buildings in Pittsfield. The buildings had been slated to be demolished for the construction of the Pyramid Mall, but these plans were met resistance by citizens groups. Fire officials investigated and arrested a local man with a history of arson for his role in setting the fire. The mall was eventually built in Lanesborough.
