    Sun powered car

    Sun powered car

A sun-powered car, claimed to be the world’s first, trundles over London’s Waterloo Bridge spanning the Thames River on August 12, 1960 as it was demonstrated to the British by Dr. Charles Escoffery, an American scientist, of Segundo, Calif. Mounted on top of the antique vehicle - a 1912 Baker electric - is a 26-square-foot panel of solar cells to catch the sun’s rays that charge up the car’s 72-volt battery system. Escoffery is touring Europe hoping to interest electronic industries there in the vast power potential from the rays of the sun. (AP Photo)

    Hollywood Sign 1978

Workmen prepare to take down the letter "D" in the famed "Hollywood" sign, the last one to be removed from the sign that has stood in the Hollywood Hills overlooking Los Angeles for 55 years, on Aug. 12, 1978. The old sign, made from telephone poles and plywood, had gradually succumbed to high winds and dry rot and is to be replaced with a new one. The new sign is being financed by several fund raising projects. The Mulholland Highway sign is shown in the foreground. (AP Photo/Wally Fong)
