Wimbledon Helen Wills Moody
United States, leading Great Britain by two matches to one at the end of the first day’s play in the Wightman Cup Lawn Tennis Contest, began today’s session in striking fashion. Mrs. S. Fabyan won the first singles match of the day against the Great Britain player Miss M. Lumb. Mrs. Helen Wills Moody played great tennis to take the first set against Kay Stammers of Great Britain, 6-2, but the American star lost the next set 6-3. The Duchess of Kent is to present the cup to the winners tonight. Indications at the moment point strongly to America’s success. In this picture, the innocent-looking fruit and greengrocery store in Kingston-on-Thames is really a cleverly camouflaged pillbox in London, England, June 11, 1945. (AP Photo)
