The Manhattan entrance to the New Brooklyn-battery tunnel in New York City, March 16, 1950 linking the lower tip of the Borough of Manhattan with the Borough of Brooklyn, which is expected to open some time around the end of May 1950. The 9,117-foot tunnel is the longest ever built in the U.S., according to engineers of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, which is directing the project. Costing $80,000,000 it has two tubes, each with two traffic lanes which will accommodate some 16,000,000 motor vehicles annually.
