    Bikini Atoll Hydrogen Bomb Detonation

    • Frank Jurkoski
    • Updated May 20, 2022

Viewed from 34-miles away aboard the USS Mt. McKinley, the fireball of the hydrogen bomb, dropped from a B-52 over Namu Island on May 21, 1956 (Bikini Atoll time), is an awesome sight although much of it is hidden by a heavy cloud layer. Below the cloud the stem of the characteristic mushroom rises from ground zero and penetrates the clouds. On top of the stem formed the mushroom top. At this stage, the fireball was four miles in diameter. The cloud that followed spread for 100 miles. (AP Photo/International News Photo, Frank Jurkoski) **NO SALES**
