Jacob N. Schutz, principal of Mount Greylock Regional School, has named the school's 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist and Commended Students.

Semifinalist Mackenzie K. Sheehy, a senior, has an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring.

Selection is based on the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

From the approximately 16,000 semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.

Livia F. Morales, Alayna M. Schwarzer and Rona L. Wang have been named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended students receive a letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program.

Although they will not continue in the 2022 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
