North Street bike lanes

The city is asking residents to complete a survey on the city’s website on its developing Bicycle Facilities Master Plan, and there will be a public meeting on the topic at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Visitors to downtown Pittsfield in recent days might have noticed a transformation taking place on North Street.

Bike lanes and new traffic patterns have been added as part of the city’s participation in the Shared Streets and Spaces program through the state Department of Transportation.

A section of North Street from Park Square to Fenn Street has been narrowed from two lanes to one and parking spots repositioned away from the curb to make way for protected bike lanes.

The bike paths are among a number of changes associated with the project designed to help communities quickly rework sidewalks, streets, curbs and parking to support safe mobility and boost commerce.

The city also is purchasing shade structures, lighting, signage, heating elements and other equipment to build temporary parklets that soon will dot the downtown area.
