Gov. Charlie Baker sat down face-to-face with the House speaker and the Senate president for the first time in over a year Monday, but he had no more luck in person than he has had virtually in trying to convince Democratic leaders that a two-month sales tax holiday and rapid deployment of federal aid are needed.


On Thursday, the Internal Revenue Service begins sending monthly child tax credit payments as part of the American Rescue Plan Act. The March law expanded the credit for this year to a maximum of $3,000 for each child aged 6 through 17 and $3,600 for each child younger than 6.
