Amazon said Wednesday the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend was its biggest ever, aided by a record number of shoppers looking for deals amid high inflation. The company does not typically share how much it earns during its sales events and did not disclose its overall revenue from the weekend. It said independent businesses that sell on its site generated more than $1 billion in sales. The National Retail Federation says a record 196 million people shopped in stores and online during the five-day shopping period that stretched from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday. It says consumers also spent an average of $325 during the weekend on holiday-related purchases, up from $301 last year.

President Joe Biden's tradition of going out to lunch, shopping and watching a Christmas tree lighting in downtown Nantucket with his family became mostly about keeping his 2-year-old grandson from having a meltdown. Every member of the Biden family seemed to be doing whatever they could think of to keep baby Beau happy for a few hours until the tree was lit. The Bidens have been spending Thanksgiving on Nantucket for decades. Performances have been suspended at one of Beijing's oldest and most renowned theaters. The pause is part of a new wave of shop and restaurant closures in response to a spike in COVID-19 cases in the Chinese capital. The Jixiang Theater was originally built in 1906. It recently moved to its present location on the 8th floor of a shopping mall that also houses shops and a fast food restaurant. China reported over 24,000 new cases Saturday, 515 of them in Beijing. The vast majority were asymptomatic. Despite that, lockdowns and other strict control measures have been put in place around the country. Many Beijing residents have received notices advising them not to leave home unless absolutely necessary.
Black Friday deals are plentiful. So how do you know which ones are truly great and which ones you should avoid? There are a few main factors shoppers should note that can help them decide whether or not to make a purchase. First, check a product’s price history and compare costs between retailers to find out how deeply it’s discounted. Then, weigh the deal quality against the product’s likelihood to sell out. Last but not least, consider whether you can afford the Black Friday deal — no matter how big the discount.
