UMass coach Frank Martin said his team's defense was lacking Saturday afternoon. Visiting Davidson shot 55.9 percent from the floor and 53.8 percent from 3-point range, making 14 of 26 from beyond the arc.

AMHERST — It is said that defense wins basketball games.

"There's a competitive spirit that everyone has to have internally, and to be good, you have to have it. It's that refusal to get beat, and we didn't play that way today," University of Massachusetts coach Frank Martin said after visiting Davidson dumped the Minutemen 93-78 Saturday afternoon.
