1 dead, five injured in school bus crash

The bus was traveling north on Cheshire Road, returning to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts from a Tanglewood event when it left the roadway to the right and crashed into a gulley, police said. In addition to the driver, there were 15 passengers on board, according to police. The driver and five passengers with non-life threatening injuries were taken by ambulance to Berkshire Medical Center, according to police, who said the driver was pronounced dead after arrival.

Police did not disclose the name of the driver or any of the injured, pending appropiate notification to kin.

Emergency personnel from the Pittsfield and Lanesborough police and fire departments responded to the scene at about 12:40 a.m., as well as ambulances from Lanesborough and County Ambulance.

The crash is under investigation by the Pittsfield Police Department's Accident Investigation Unit. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Pittsfield department at 413-448-9700.
