Lights, camera, action! BIFFMA kicks off this week

The 14th annual Berkshire International Film Festival promises to not only transport film fans to foreign lands, but also to deliver important, engaging, powerful and entertaining stories from around the United States to right here in the Berkshires. The four-day celebration includes a lineup featuring 30 documentaries, 30 narrative features and 21 short films from 24 countries. The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington with the documentary, "What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael." Opening night in Pittsfield follows at 6 p.m. Friday, May 31, at The Beacon with a showing of "The Apollo." A special tribute to Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at The Mahaiwe. The evening will include a conversation between Scorsese and Kent Jones, film director and director of the New York Film Festival and a screening of Scorsese's film, "Silence." The weekend will wrap up at The Mahaiwe at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 2, with a screening of "Museum Town," Jennifer Trainer's documentary about the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Enjoy an afternoon of free coffee tastings

Become a coffee connoisseur as you sample coffees from different countries and learn to identify their flavor notes during a free coffee tasting, noon until 2 p.m., on Monday, May 27 at the Stanmeyer Gallery and Shaker Dam Coffeehouse, 2 Main St., West Stockbridge. Challenge your family to a game night

Grab the family and head over to 2 Flights Up from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, May 30, for its weekly Family Game Night. "The Past is Present" opening reception

Help celebrate the opening of "The Past is Present," at the Sandisfield Arts Center from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 1. The show features oil and watercolor paintings of western Ireland and of North Chester, a village in Hampden County, where the artist, Olwen Dowling, makes her home. In addition to painting, the artist is a printmaker in the Intaglio style. She is a member of the Zea Printmaking Studio. and a member of the National Association of Women Artists. Saturday's opening reception is free and open to the public. After the opening, the show will run until June 30, and can be seen before performances or by appointment.
