Thought for the day

“If writers were good business men, they’d have too much sense to be writers.” —  IRVIN S. COBB, American humorist (1876-1944)

Good morning, Berkshires. For those of you who received your e-edition (the electronic companion to the print Eagle) late, humble apologies.  Our vendor had a tech malfunction.

Meanwhile, we have a news-filled Beat for you, leading off with ...

Pittsfield Police are still on the lookout for a man who escaped custody while being treated at Berkshire Medical Center. A black belt in judo, Harry Chandler, 33, of Pittsfield, overpowered an officer with the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office around 2 p.m. Monday and fled the hospital while only wearing the telltale orange pants of an inmate. He remains at large.

Bikers gathered Monday in Dalton to pay their respects to the fellow motorcyclists who died June 21 after being struck by an out of control driver.

Also, an ill elderly Pittsfield woman, who lifted hearts with her dying wish to see the Pittsfield July Fourth parade, has died at 76; she met her late husband at the parade, and wanted to see the spectacle one more time.

A swimmer at Onota Lake was struck by a boat, injuring her leg.

A third suspect has been arraigned on charges related to the shooting death of Asiyanna Jones in 2017; prosecutors believe Jones was not targeted, but rather was hit by a stray bullet.

And Lenox teachers have received a 3-year contract that includes salary increases.

When you subscribe to the print or digital Eagle, you understand what's happening in Berkshire County on any given day. That's a helpful and powerful tool, available at 99 cents for the first month.

Very best,

Noah Hoffenberg
