Thought for the day

“Education is a private matter between the person and the world of knowledge and experience, and has little to do with school or college.” — LILLIAN SMITH, American writer-social critic (1897-1966)

The Greeting

Friday, Aug. 9, 2019

Good day, Berkshire County. It's T-minus six hours until Hoffenberg Staycation 2019 is in full effect. Eagle deputy managing editor Jimmy Nesbitt will be covering for me while I'm away, so don't be surprised if you see his signature at the end of TheBeat next week.

In the news ...

The magistrate overseeing the state hearings on Sweet Brook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center is concerned for the welfare of residents while the attorneys for the center buy more time with their appeals.

A Berkshire Superior Court judge has denied a bail reduction for one of the accused in a violent assault and shooting at the Ashley Reservoir last year.

A driver, 17, whom police believe was under the influence of cannabis, allegedly struck a young woman in Great Barrington while she was attending to her disabled car.

Also in Great Barrington, Lake Mansfield will benefit from a $25,000 EPA grant to begin remediation of stormwater runoff.

Interim Town Administratior Mark Webber has begun work in the town of Stockbridge.

And North Adams Police continue to look into whether an act of vandalism was motivated by hate.

You need The Berkshire Eagle to know what's happening in your town hall, your police station and on your street. Renew or subscribe today.

Very best,

Noah Hoffenberg
