Area Notes: Adams girls win Golden Bears Basketball Tournament

By Berkshire Eagle staff

SPRINGFIELD — The 7th-8th grade Adams girls travel basketball team won the Golden Bears Basketball Tournament at Western New England University in mid-December.

Adams used its fast-paced, high-pressure attack to go 5-0 during the tournament. The team defeated Chicopee 43-40, St. Pat's of South Hadley 52-46 and Wilbraham 37-20 in pool play.

Averie McGrath scored 17 points, leading Adams to a 58-34 win over Springfield in the semifinals. Adams won the championship game over the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club 54-39. Rylynn Whitek led the way with 23 points.

"Our team really tries to mirror the Hoosac Valley varsity [team]," Adams coach Shawn McGrath said. "A lot of the teams have trouble with the full-court press for the entire game. We really focus on getting them ready to step on the court [at Hoosac] next year for the eighth graders."
