Two area theaters — one in Pittsfield, one in nearby Ghent, N.Y. — are looking for actors from child to adult for upcoming productions.


PITTSFIELD — Berkshire Theatre Group is seeks child actors who are currently in grades 3 through 9 for its prdocution of Disney's "The Little Mermaid JR." The roles are open to members of the Berkshire community.

Auditions — by appointment only — will take place 6-8 p.m., Jan. 15 and 16, at The Colonial Theatre, 111 South St. Students should arrive ready to learn a song from "The Little Mermaid JR." Callbacks will take place as needed.

The show is scheduled to run April 24 through 27 at The Colonial. Rehearsals will begin March 3 and continue approximately three days a week (including weekends), until two weeks prior to performances, when at rehearsal days will be increased.

Rehearsals will be held in Pittsfield. Attending all rehearsals is required.

This production will be directed by Travis Daly, with music direction by Erin M. White and choreography by Kathy Jo Grover.

With lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, music by Alan Menken and book by Doug Wright, "The Little Mermaid JR." is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and the Disney film about a beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, who longs to leave her magical undersea home—and her fins—behind and live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she's the girl whose enchanting voice he's been seeking.

CHATHAM, N.Y. — Ghent Playhouse is scheduling auditions for its March/April production of the Tony Award-wining musical "Fun Home," 6:30 p.m., Jan. 14 and 15, at St. James Catholic Church 117 Hudson Ave.

Rehearsals begin Jan. 27. They are scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at the Ghent Playhouse, 6 Town Hall Road in Ghent, where the show will run weekends March 27 through April 12, with a preview performance March 26.

The production is being directed by Michael McDermott and Michael C. Mensching, with musical direction by Joanne Mensching.

Winner of five 2015 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, "Fun Home" — with music by Jeanine Tesori. and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron — is based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir about the author at three different ages, revealing memories of her dysfunctional family who connect with her in surprising new ways.

Needed are male and female performers ranging in age from roughly 7 to 60.

Those auditioning should prepare a post-1960 musical theater song by such composers as William Finn, Michael John LaChiusa, Jason Robert Brown, Jeanine Tesori, and Stephen Sondheim. An accompanist will be provided. The audition process also will include readings from the script.
