Baker annual address set for Jan. 23

BOSTON — Gov. Charlie Baker will deliver the annual State of the Commonwealth speech on Jan. 23, an event that will take on added significance as the governor enters the last year of his term and begins to ramp up his re-election campaign.

The speech will take place the night before the governor is expected to roll out his fiscal 2019 budget proposal. Both will go a long way toward setting the tone for the coming year when policy fights, or the lack of action in the Legislature on the governor's priorities, could become amplified in the election year climate.

The televised speech will take place, as is traditional, in the House chamber in the State House where lawmakers, judicial leaders and special guests typically turn out to hear the governor lay out his agenda for the coming year.
