Barrington Stage drops first show of 2020 season
PITTSFIELD — Barrington Stage Company has canceled its opening production of the 2020 season, "The Great Leap" by Lauren Yee. The play — set within the framework of an American college basketball team's visit to China in the 1980s to play an exhibition game in Beijing — was scheduled to open May 27 at the St. Germain Stage in BSC's Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center, 37 Linden St.
The season now will begin June 18 with Nilo Cruz' "Anna in the Tropics," also at the St. Germain Stage.
According to a newsletter announcement to "our BSC community," the move has been made in response to the coronavirus pandemic. At the present time, the notice says, all other productions will go on as scheduled.
"We want to acknowledge the very challenging and uncharted times we are living in," artistic director Julianne Boyd and general manager Maggie LaMee say in the announcement. "We hope that above all, you are staying safe and taking care of yourselves.
"This was not an easy decision, as it affects the many people who contribute to making our shows possible: our subscribers, our ticket holders, our donors, our artists, our actors and our craftspersons."
Boyd and LaMee advise those who have already purchased tickets to "The Great Leap" that they can either exchange their tickets for another 2020 production; donate their tickets and receive a tax deduction for the total ticket value; or receive a credit equal to the amount of their purchase, valid through 2021.
"We are also happy to refund any tickets already purchased for cancelled performances," Boyd and LaMee said. "As you can imagine, this unplanned loss of ticket revenue impacts the financial security of our theatre ...
"We look forward to returning to business as usual and ... creat(e) theatre experiences that engage and excite our audiences."
