The Meat

Good morning, foodie friends.

On Monday, our newsroom was filled with the sweet smells of holiday potluck — that’s right, I’m talking Crockpots full of macaroni and cheese, savory cranberry barbecue meatballs and shredded beef. Someone made a full pan of delicious cinnamon rolls, and a boozy rum cake with the perfect crunchy shell and super moist sponge was a hit of the dessert offerings.


There was too much food and so much fun. Our newsroom has had a difficult week, filled with personal loses. It was nice to set down our work for an hour and visit over paper plates filled to the brim with all sorts of comfort food (did I mention the homemade rolls?). It reminded me of Sheffield author Janet Reich Elsbach’s new cookbook, which documents the importance of food in times of grief, celebration and change. "I'm utterly and indelibly convinced that providing a meal is the best way to show up for people," she writes in the cookbook.

It’s important to remember that while the holidays are a magical time for a lot of us, for others this season can be difficult. Why not take a moment and check in on that neighbor you haven’t seen in a while and bring over a dozen sugar cookies? Our carol-inspired figgy pudding would be perfect over a cup of tea with your great aunt, or a friend. If you don’t feel like cooking, just show up. If I’ve learned anything this past week, it’s that the most important gift we can give someone is just to show up.

I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday week, filled with love, laughter and maybe too much food. Scratch that: there can never be too much food.
