Becket annual town meeting preview
Where: Becket Washington School, 12 Maple St.
Town residents will vote on 32 warrant articles, including one that details a $6.7 million budget. Other items of interest include whether to adopt a meals tax and a ban on plastic bags.
Meals tax: Town officials pursued a measure that would impose a 0.75 percent meals tax on meals prepared in the town's restaurants, as recommended by the state's Department of Revenue. But some restaurateurs argue it would pose an undue burden on the small town's eateries.
Plastic-bag ban: Voters will be asked to approve a citizen petition banning single-use plastic bags in the town. Proponents say thin-film plastic checkout bags pollute natural resources, clog storm drainage systems, bog down solid waste collection and recycling facilities, and require the use of crude oil to produce.
Fiscal 2020: $6,716,894
Increase: 4.7 percent
$55,500: A new police cruiser
$60,000: To install a floor drain and oil separator at the Ambulance Department to prevent regular flooding
