BECKET — The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a lakefront home Thursday.

The Becket Fire Department responded to 8 S. Lake Way just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday and discovered smoke spewing from the one-story home, with "a bit" of flames showing in the basement, according to Becket Fire Chief Paul A. Mikaniewicz.

"It was being renovated, so nobody was home at the time," he said.

Members of the Becket Highway Department went to the scene to sand the slippery road, and fire crews from Becket, Otis and Hinsdale battled the blaze for several hours. The Police Department and building inspector also were on the scene, he said.

While the structure remains standing, the fire required an extensive response, including the removal of several windows, Mikaniewicz said. It is believed to be a second home, he said.

"It will be considered a total loss," he said.

The online assessor's records don't identify the owners of the house or its value. A message left for the town's assessor's office was not immediately returned Friday.
