GREAT BARRINGTON — When Massachusetts legalized recreational cannabis in 2016, it opened up a world of possibility for brothers and longtime marijuana enthusiasts Daniel and Max Lowenstein.

Two years later, Berkshire Glass & Grow was born.

The Lowenstein brothers began their business online in 2018 before renting a space at 965 S. Main St. Berkshire Glass & Grow, which officially opened May 19, sells a variety of smoking accessories, such as bongs, vapes and indoor gardening equipment, including LED lights and grow tents. The products are from a multitude of wholesalers.

"Cannabis is something there's a huge market for, but now it's finally becoming legitimate," Daniel said. "It really seemed like a huge opportunity."

The two brothers used a combination of their own savings and money from family members to start their business, which they co-own. They also live with each other.

"It's the best," Max said when asked to describe their dynamic. "It's really nice running a business with your brother. You always get to be on the same page."

Daniel and Max said Berkshire County has been welcoming to their store and others like it. Many cannabis dispensaries recently have opened in the Berkshires, including in Great Barrington, leading to what Max called a "symbiotic" relationship with dispensaries and Glass & Grow.

"It's really cool seeing the cultural shift, going from something so stigmatized to something that's been accepted and embraced in a mainstream way," Daniel said.

Max added: "The most common reaction that customers have when they come into our store is, 'Oh, my God, I can't believe you're here doing this. My whole life, this has been illegal, and now you're allowed to just open an accessory store right on Route 7.' It's like if you haven't had alcohol your whole life and someone puts a nice cold beer in front of you and you have your first beer at age 60."

To help their customers have that "first beer," Daniel and Max said they keep their prices affordable. Their smoking equipment ranges from $3 to $350, depending on the product.

Pointing to a 20-inch-tall, $180 bong, Daniel said: "We want to put that in someone's hand at a price that won't be their whole paycheck."

Both brothers believe that the rest of the country will follow Massachusetts and other states and eventually legalize cannabis. Since that is still to come, they are excited about what the future will hold for the cannabis industry.

"It's the time and the place, definitely," Max said with a grin.

Berkshire Glass & Grow is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, except Monday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. You can find more information at
