Bits & Bites: Local cookbook author wins award. Cupcake Wars on tap



"Love, Laughter, and Rhubarb" by Tinky Weisblat of Hawley recently was named best cookbook of 2018 by the New England Book Festival.

The book documents the author's passion for an underappreciated New England food with recipes, stories and vintage illustrations. It is available from local bookstores and at

Weisblat will host the second annual Hawley Rhubarb Matinee from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at her home in Hawley. She will be at the Lenox Rhubarb Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.on Saturday, June 8. For more information about the book or about these events, call Weisblat at 413-339-4747.


The National Alliance on Mental Illness Berkshire County will hold its 5th Annual Cupcake Wars Fundraiser on Thursday at Berkshire Hills Country Club, 500 Benedict Road, Pittsfield.

Bakeries from throughout Berkshire County will compete for the best cupcake in the following categories: People's Choice, Best Tasting and Most Creative.

The cost to attend is $35 in advance and $40 at the door, and includes an Italian dinner prepared by UNICO of Pittsfield and cupcake tasting. At the end of the evening, a dozen full-size cupcakes from each bakery will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. All attendees are eligible to bid.

The Stockbridge Grange will serve a public stuffed breast of chicken dinner, family-style, from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday in the hall at 51 Church St., Stockbridge

The cost is: Adults, $ 12; younger than 12, $6; younger than 5, free.
