Bits & Bites: Pig roast, Greek Fest, blueberry supper slated
NEW MARLBOROUGH PIG ROAST
Members of the New Marlborough Volunteer Fire Co. will hold their 26th Annual Pig Roast on Saturday at the New Marlborough Fire Station on Norfolk Road, Southfield.
The dinner, which includes roast pork and turkey, will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. and will followed by dancing to live music and a raffle with more than 50 prizes. There will also be a face-painter for children.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets for both the raffle and the dinner are available at the Mill River General Store and from any New Marlborough Fire Company member.
As in previous years, the pig roast will wrap up a day of New Marlborough events that also include the annual Elihu Burritt Day activities on the Village Green in the center of New Marlborough village.

SENIOR MEAL IN READSBORO, VT
The Friendly Mission Circle will serve its senior meal at noon today at the First Baptist Church on Main Street, Readsboro, Vt.
The menu will consist of pulled pork or sloppy Joes on rolls, cole slaw and potato salad with a fruity dessert.
The suggested donation is $3.50 for seniors or $4.50 for others. Bingo is played before the meal. All are welcome.
The 64th annual blueberry supper will be held Saturday at the First Congregational Church of Chester at 334 Skyline Trail.
There will be two sittings; 4:30 and 6 p.m. The menu is roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, marinated carrots, summer squash medley, tossed salad, and homemade blueberry pie and ice cream for dessert. There will also be a limited number of blueberry pies available for take-home purchase. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. 'FLAVOR: A CONVERSATION'
Renowned chef and writer Dan Barber will speak at a Berkshire Grown event in conversation with Fred Rutberg, publisher of The Berkshire Eagle. "Flavor: a Brunch and Conversation" will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at a private farm setting in Sheffield.
Barber will talk about the importance of building community and how eating local food plays a vital role. Rutberg and Barber will discuss the importance of supporting a local community, the vital role healthy food systems plays in local economies, and about the forces at work for growing a locally focused newspaper.
Barber is the chef and co-owner of Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, and the author of The Third Plate (May 2014, The Penguin Press). His opinions on food and agricultural policy have appeared in The New York Times, along with many other publications. Barber has received multiple James Beard awards including Best Chef: New York City (2006) and the country's Outstanding Chef (2009). In 2009 he was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world.

BIG ELM CREATES MUSIC FESTIVAL BEER
Big Elm Brewery and Oldtone Productions, the producers of the Oldtone Roots Music Festival, have announced a cooperative effort to produce a beer for the 2019 late summer festival season. The beer name and label "Cattle Rag IPA" were inspired by the long-hair Scottish Highland Cattle that Cool Whisper Farm is known for. The cattle are an indispensable (but distant) part of the Oldtone Roots Music Festival experience, which is held on Matt and Lisa Schober's working farm.
Cattle Rag IPA is available at Big Elm Brewery and is for sale in Massachusetts now, and will be on restaurants and store shelves soon. It will available through Dutchess Distributing in New York State, and is available in Connecticut on tap now. GREEK FEST 2019
St. George Greek Orthodox Church will hold its Greek Fest from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday under a big tent at the church, 73 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
In addition to Greek food and pastries, there will be Greek music and dancers, the Athenian Boutique, tours of the sanctuary and a raffle.
Admission is free. The event will be held rain or shine.
