Close shave: Barbers at shuttered shop in Pittsfield welcomed to new home

PITTSFIELD — Shear Magic is suddenly abuzz with new business.

Lamar and Laurie Smith, owners of Shear Magic Family Hair Designers, have added four barber chairs to their salon and barbershop at 105 Elm St. to accommodate barbers displaced by the recent closing of Sim's Barber Shop on Dalton Avenue.

Kendrick Reese, a former Sim's barber, said he reached out to the Smiths about the arrangement. He said it was a win-win situation, noting that the former Sim's barbers bring their own clientele with them to the new space.

It took three days to convert an empty space for the displaced Sim's barbers — Reese, Mary Launt, Gilberto Diaz and Mike Eckert — who wanted to stay together.

The chairs arrived Wednesday, and the space was ready Thursday.

"I told them I would have it ready in a couple of days," Lamar Smith said. "I wanted to make them happy by keeping my word."
