Dalton man rolls car after falling asleep at the wheel

PITTSFIELD — A Dalton man suffered minor injuries on Monday night after he fell asleep at the wheel, struck a parked truck and rolled his vehicle on Dalton Avenue.

Michael Szklasz was heading east in his Mercedes Benz sedan about 9:30 p.m. when he fell asleep and drifted into the breakdown lane, striking an unoccupied 2004 Chevy pickup, according to Pittsfield Police Sgt. Marc Maddalena. The impact of the collision caused Szklasz's vehicle to go airborne and land on its roof.

Szklasz, who was wearing his seat belt, was freed from his car by Pittsfield Fire Department and County Ambulance personnel and taken to Berkshire Medical Center with injuries that weren't deemed serious, Maddalena said.

He has since been released from the hospital and cited with a civil infraction.
