Defending champions Mertes and Wilson lead 38th Pewter Cup after opening round

The 38th annual Pewter Cup Classic teed off Friday at Berkshire Hills Country Club, with 112 teams taking part in the action.

After the opening day, defending champions Michael Mertes and Joe Wilson are back on top of the leaderboard, after shooting a six-under-par 66. The duo hold a one-shot lead over a pair of local teams in Steve Sykes and Andy Dastoli, and Kevin Quinto and Mike Kays.

Mertes and Wilson started off with a birdie on the par three third hole and finished the front nine at one-under. On the back nine, Mertes birdied on the 10th to start things off, then Wilson birdied on 11, and they traded birdies again on the next two holes before Wilson capped the day with a birdie on No. 18.

Sykes and Dastoli carded a bogey free 67 in the morning wave while Quinto/Kays carded six birdies and an eagle for their 67.

The stacked leaderboard has eight more teams just two shots back after carding 68s. Local teams Matt Scarafoni/Chad Alibozek, Justin McKennon/Adam Trivilino, Jeff and Rick Puleri, Bob Linn/Jim Patterson, and Brandon Sullivan/Cam Boraski all finished in the pack at 68. Three-time champions Billy McDonald and John Kelly also sit just two back.

The entire Championship division is within four shots of the lead heading into Saturday.

The leaders will tee off at 9:20am Saturday morning in round two.
