Great Barrington man accused of plying teen with pot, offering cash for pictures

PITTSFIELD — A Great Barrington sex offender with a history of child rape and sexual assault convictions is being held on $5,000 bail amid new accusations of assaulting an 18-year-old man in early October.

Brian C. Hohman, 53, allegedly tried to ply the man with marijuana, and offered to pay cash for the man's underwear and pictures of his genitals.

Hohman is a convicted sex offender in New York and Florida, and was accused of trying to lure a 15-year-old boy to commit an unspecified indecent act at a city swimming pool in Dundee, Scotland, in 2010.

In his most recent case, according to court documents, Hohman allegedly made contact with the man at his workplace, a Lenox-based department store.

About four weeks before the alleged assault, the man was approached by Hohman, who asked about underwear.

Hohman used the man's cellphone and called his own phone from it, and began texting him and occasionally stopped by his workplace to talk to him.

At one point, Hohman allegedly gave the man a bag of marijuana and first brought up the notion of trading marijuana and cash for used underwear and/or explicit photos.

He offered $10 for a photo and $35 for the underwear, the man said. Neither was provided.

On Oct. 1, Hohman contacted the man and made arrangements to meet in the parking lot of the Merrill Road shopping plaza in Pittsfield. The man got into Hohman's car and was asked about making a deal as they had discussed, but he was again rebuffed.

Hohman then allegedly began asking the man about his body hair and, at one point, reached into his shorts and grabbed him. The man jumped and told Hohman he had to go.

Hohman then allegedly gave the man a bag of marijuana-infused candy and again asked about making some kind of deal.

The man reported the alleged assault to Pittsfield police and identified Hohman as the perpetrator via a photo array.

Police had the man make arrangements to meet with Hohman on Sunday, outside his workplace, where he was arrested by Lenox police. Hohman was found in possession of two cellphones, which were seized as evidence.

He pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Tuesday to one count of indecent assault and battery.

Judge Paul Smyth set bail at $5,000, with the conditions that he have no contact with the alleged victim and remain at least 100 yards away.

Hohman is due back in court Dec. 14 for a pretrial hearing.

From 1989 to 1992, Hohman assaulted eight males, ages 12 to 17. He pleaded guilty in Berkshire Superior Court on March 29, 1993, to four counts of rape; nine counts of rape and abuse of a child without force; nine counts of indecent assault and battery on a child age 14 or over; six counts of indecent assault and battery on a person age 14 or over; and four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He was sentenced to six to eight years in prison.

In January 2015, Hohman was fined $250 for failing to register as a sex offender, and in June 2015, he was fined after being found guilty of sexual conduct for a fee and accosting or annoying another person after repeatedly propositioning a man, who also declined his advances.

Details were not available on the Scotland, New York and Florida cases.
