NEW YORK — Lucas Hnath's "A Doll's House, Part 2" tops American Theatre magazine's list of 10 most-produced plays (14 with ties) among members of Theatre Communications Group for the second consecutive year.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG) is a service, education, advocacy and resource organization comprising over 700 not-for-profit theaters and affiliate organizations and nearly 10,000 individual members.

American Theatre magazine is published 10 times a year as a program of Theatre Communications Group.

"I'm deeply honored that 'A Doll's House, Part 2' continues to be performed at theaters across the country. It's an honor I share with the many artists—actors, directors, designers, dramaturgs—with whom I made the play," Hnath said in a news release from TCG.

Lauren Gunderson will be the most-produced playwright, with 33 total productions.

Based on the 2019-20 seasons reported by 387 TCG's member theaters, these lists customarily omit holiday-themed shows ("The Santaland Diaries" and "A Christmas Carol") as well as works by Shakespeare.

This year's 14 most-produced plays include works by seven female playwrights and six male playwrights, while the 22 most-produced playwrights comprises 12 women and 10 men. In addition, there are six playwrights of color on the most-produced playwrights' list, tying with last year for the most racially diverse it's ever been. Larissa FastHorse (Sicangu Lakota) is the first Native American/Indigenous playwright with a play on the most produced plays list.

"In 1994, when we first began compiling and reporting on our member theaters' seasons, those lists were (composed) almost entirely of cisgender white men," said Teresa Eyring, executive director of TCG, in the news release. "The encouraging statistics from the past few years demonstrate the impact of our field coming together in a shared commitment to equitably reflect the diversity of our country."

"I write plays that give women voice and put their struggles, passions, power and wit center stage," said Lauren Gunderson, back for her second year as the country's most produced playwright. "The deep thrill of this honor is that it means that women's stories (which are vital human stories for all audiences, not just for women) are more of a priority on stages across this country. To see so many women (including my amazing co-author Margot Melcon) on this list makes that even more clear. Our stories are valuable, necessary, desired, and here to stay."

Lauren Yee, new to the top of the list, said in the news release, "The fact that 'Cambodian Rock Band' and 'The Great Lea' are two of the most produced plays in the country this season demonstrates the hunger audiences have for thrilling new narratives that cast actors of color as unlikely heroes in their own stories. It also speaks to the incredible depth and breadth of the Asian American community. It's an incredible honor."
