Egremont police chief leaves post; retired chief steps up in interim

EGREMONT — After about a year as town police chief, Tyler Race has stepped down from the department.

The Select Board received Race's resignation letter on Oct. 16; it was accepted at the board's next meeting Oct. 23, said Selectman Mary Brazie, who also is town office administrator.

It wasn't clear why Race left the force. Messages seeking comment from Race were not returned by press time.

"His resignation letter didn't say a lot," Brazie said.

The letter notes that leaving the force was an "extremely difficult" decision and he's thankful for the opportunities provided by the town. Before becoming chief, Race was a six-year member of the department.

While the town searches for a new police chief, retired Chief Brian Shaw has returned to the helm on a five-month interim basis beginning Nov. 1.

"It's my first day," joked Shaw when reached, a town native who got his start in police work with the Egremont department, from 1984 to 1989. Shaw then joined the Stockbridge Police Department. He served as an officer there until returning to Egremont, where he was chief from 2013 through the spring of 2016.

In 2013, Shaw replaced former Police Chief Reena Bucknell, who had been suspended following a vote of no confidence from her officers and was then fired.

Brazie said Egremont is not accepting applications for a new police chief, yet. The town is going to take its time with the search.

Brazie said she's happy with the work that Race and Shaw have done for the town.

"A clone of Brian or Tyler would be good," she said, "but really, (the Select Board) hasn't discussed what we'll be looking for yet."
