Eric Buddington seeks third term on North Adams City Council
When Buddington first sought a seat on the council, he wanted to become involved and better understand how things worked.
"There's so much that happens that's underappreciated. There's so much work that's simple to describe but hard to do, like sewer and our electrical system," Buddington said.
In his first term on the council, Buddington sponsored a Right to Farm ordinance that aimed to protect the future of agriculture in North Adams. He recently introduced a resolution to declare North Adams a friendly community to pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.
"I think it's very important to protect the future of agriculture of North Adams," Buddington said.
In a third term, Buddington would like to focus on improving the internet infrastructure in North Adams. He's argued that as the the city replaces its aging water and sewer infrastructure, it should simultaneously install the conduit for fiber-optic internet.
Buddington said he would also maintain contacts with other towns, such as Williamstown, that have a shared interest in improving their internet infrastructure.
"Communication is a necessity of culture, of our community, and right now our communications are not owned by the public. We're limited to what we can get from the private sector," Buddington said.
Buddington will also continue to push for improved access to city information online whenever possible. For example, he'd like to see the city's water testing results posted to its website regularly.
"It's not that we're going to catch huge problems, it's that we're going to avoid them," Buddington argued.
As a result of Buddington's advocacy, the city council recently passed an ordinance that requires city board and commissions to promptly submit meeting minutes to the city clerk's office.
Buddington is a stay-at-home dad during the week and a dance musician who plays the violin on the weekend. Given his background in computer networking, Buddington also assists Northern Berkshire Community Television.
The city election is on Nov. 7.
