Falling tree temporarily cuts power Sunday in Great Barrington

GREAT BARRINGTON — Power went off in downtown Great Barrington Sunday afternoon after a tree fell across Alford Road and took utility lines down with it, police said.

The incident was reported to police at 2:20 p.m. The falling tree blocked the entire road in the vicinity of Hurlburt Road near the entrance to Bard College at Simon's Rock. Downed power lines could be seen smoking at the side of the road. It was unclear how long power was lost in Great Barrington, but the incident had been wrapped up by 4:30 p.m., police said.

The Monterey and Sheffield fire departments responded to the scene, as did State Police from the Lee barracks and Great Barrington police. The tree that fell showed signs of rot.
