ABOMINABLE (PG)

When teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), name him "Everest" and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth. But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help Everest get home. "Abominable" is sweet and simple enough, but its emotionality always feels thin and, like much of the film, paint by numbers. (Coyle, The Associated Press — 9/27). 1 hour, 32 minutes. NAM

henchmen. Swifty soon discovers Otto Von Walrus' plan to drill beneath Arctic surface to unleash enough ancient gas to melt the Arctic, in order to reign as the world's supreme leader. Now, Swifty has to enlist the help of his friends: PB, an introverted polar bear, Lemmy, a scatterbrained albatross, Sal and Weez, two conspiracy theorist otters and Jade Fox, a tough as nails mechanic. CITIZEN JANE

Arguably no one did more to shape our understanding of the modern American city than Jane Jacobs, the visionary activist and writer who fought to preserve urban communities in the face of destructive development projects. Director Matt Tyranuer ("Valentino: The Last Emperor") vividly brings to life Jacobs' 1960s showdown with ruthless construction kingpin Robert Moses over his plan to raze lower Manhattan to make way for a highway, a dramatic struggle over the very soul of the neighborhood. 1 hour 32 minutes. LC

Byrne, Tichina Arnold, Peter Facinelli, Anne Winters, Elizabeth Lail, Jordan Calloway, Talitha Eliana Bateman, Tom Segura. 1 hour, 30 minutes. BM

DOWNTON ABBEY (PG)

Written by series creator Julian Fellowes, almost every character who made it out of the six season run alive is back for their big screen debut with their own little arc and some lavish costume changes. But Michael Engler's direction doesn't bring any cinematic grandeur to this continuing story of a family and their servants. And Fellowes' script has the impossible task of giving every character their own mini plot, as if focusing in on one or a few would have had fans of the other members of the very large ensemble up in arms. Together it makes "Downton Abbey" the movie a fairly shallow experience. With Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth McGovern, Penelope Wilton, Stephen Campbell Moore, Tuppence Middleton, Joanne Froggatt, Laura Carmichael. (Bahr, The Associated Press — 9/23). 2 hours, 1 minute. TM

GEMINI MAN (PG-13)

Henry Brogan (Will Smith) is an elite assassin who becomes the target of a mysterious operative who can seemingly predict his every move. To his horror, he soon learns that the man who's trying to kill him is a younger, faster, cloned version of himself. The story is curiously stale and at times feels like a mashup of other, better movies. With Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Benedict Wong, Linda Emond, Theodora Miranne. (Bahr, The Associated Press — 10/12). 1 hour, 57 minutes. BM

HARRIET (PG-13)

"Harriet" tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery and transformation into one of America's greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. With Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monae, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, Clarke Peters. 2 hours, 5 minutes. TC / TM

JOKER (R)

Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks — the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker. An empty, foggy exercise in secondhand style and second-rate philosophizing. The movie is weightless and shallow. It isn't any fun, and it can't be taken seriously. With Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz. (Scott, The New York Times — 10/5). 2 hours, 2 minutes. BC / BM

JUDY (PG-13)

Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in "The Wizard of Oz," but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of "the world's greatest entertainer." With Renee Zellweger, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell, Jessie Buckley, Michael Gambon. 1 hour, 58 minutes. CT

MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL (PG)

"Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" picks up several years after "Maleficent," in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney's most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora. The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within. The first movie, a box-office hit, was a mess but its star attraction, Angelina Jolie, was the one thing it had going for it. This needless sequel to the 2014 "Sleeping Beauty" riff fails to fully value the entire of appeal of these films: Jolie's Maleficent. With Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Imelda Staunton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple. (Coyle, The Associated Press — 10/18). 1 hour, 58 minutes. BC / BM / NAM
