Fire tears through A-Mart building in Pittsfield

Posted

PITTSFIELD — Backlit smoke billowed high above North Street on Tuesday night as a fire ripped through a landmark North Street store.

The fire broke out at A-Mart around 10:24 p.m., according to Pittsfield Police Sgt. John Murphy.

Black soot covered the A-Mart sign as onlookers gathered around the scene. The building's melted frame reached up over the building's edge as dueling towers pelted the crumpled building with water.

First responders said the building was engulfed in flames upon their arrival.

One firefighter was taken to Berkshire Medical Center for treatment, according to officers at the scene. North Street was shut down from Madison Avenue to Linden Street.

The Pittsfield Police Department is asking people to avoid the area.
