Gilardi finishes 14th at Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship

YARMOUTH — Matt Gilardi flirted with the lead in the final round of the Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship, before being undone by a disappointing final nine holes at Bayberry Hills Golf Course.

The 28-year-old Gilardi, who is a member at both Skyline Country Club and the Country Club of Pittsfield, stood at 1-under par through 27 holes — one shot behind eventual winner Ryan Riley — before a final nine of 5-over 41 left him six shots behind and in a tie for 14th place.

Riley, who captured the Mass. Amateur title when the tournament was played at Wyantenuck Country Club in 2011, had rounds of 71 and 69 to finish three shots ahead of Sean McReynolds, (Braintree Municipal Golf Course) while Gilardi had rounds of 72 and 76.

The other two Berkshire County players in the field, Waubeeka Golf Links members Jeff Bourdon and Jamie Gaffey, didn't fare as well as Gilardi. Bourdon slumped to an 86 after an opening 78 to finish in a tie for 57th place. Gaffey shot an opening-round 80 to miss the cut.

While his final nine was certainly disappointing, Gilardi's strong play proved that he can compete in a strong, state-level field. Playing 27 holes under par is certainly no easy task under tournament pressure.
