Great Barrington: Scholar to discuss 'Politics of Opera'

Close Encounters with Music will present Conversations With ... author and scholar Mitchell Cohen on "The Politics of Opera" at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at St. James Place, 352 Main St.

Cohen, who combines his academic expertise in political science and lifelong interest in the spectacle of opera in his new book, "The Politics of Opera — A History from Monteverdi to Mozart," will underscore the political dimensions of libretti and ideological elements of opera, which absorbs and mirrors currents of the day in dramatic dress-up.

His book will be available for purchase and signing.
