HANCOCK — Voters couldn't settle the issue of whether the next town treasurer should be appointed rather than elected as the lone ballot question in Monday's annual town election ended in a 46-46 tie.

Town Clerk Linda Burdick said she's never had a tie vote in any election during her 15 years in office. Burdick told The Eagle she's consulting with state elections officials on what to do next regarding the ballot question.

In all, 107 of Hancock's 493 registered voters cast ballots, a 22 percent turnout.

Voters did manage to fill two open positions with write-in candidates: Bruce Weiner was elected to the School Committee and Zachary Hanson grabbed a seat on the Planning Board.

Incumbent candidates unopposed for reelection were: School Committee, Alex Kastrinakis, three years; Cemetery Commission, Lydia Cassavaugh, three years; constable, Mark Gaskill, three years; library trustee, Jane Roberts, three years; tax collector, Julie M. Williams, three years; treasurer, Joan Burdick, three years; town clerk, Linda Burdick, three years; and moderator, Brian Fairbank, one year.

Two newly elected officials also had a free ride — Renee Hanson for Finance Committee and library trustee Jane Roberts, each securing three-year terms.
