Hearing continued for Sheffield men in assault tied to lethal OD
GREAT BARRINGTON — A pretrial hearing has been continued to Nov. 30 for a father and son accused of kidnapping and attacking a man they believe helped a family member obtain a lethal heroin dose.
Ralph Lombardi, 58, and Michael Lombardi, 26, both of Sheffield, were arrested Sept. 18 outside their van on Baldwin Hill Road in Egremont after learning that Christine Lombardi, 32, had died of an overdose in Rhode Island. She was Ralph Lombardi's daughter and Michael Lombardi's sister.
The pair had gone to Egremont to confront the man, who climbed into their van for a conversation that turned violent and ended with Ralph Lombardi beating the man on the side of the road. That man has not been charged.
Lori Levinson, the Lombardis' attorney, told The Eagle the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is evaluating the elder Lombardi's eligibility for the Valor Act Diversion Program, which can help steer veterans into treatment rather than incarceration if they have no prior criminal history.
Ralph Lombardi served in the U.S. Marine Corps; neither man has a criminal record, according to the court.
