High School Roundup: Mount Greylock's Wells, McDermott win Nordic race at Notchview

WINDSOR — The second race of the Berkshire League Nordic ski season took place Saturday morning, and the skating race provided a close finish on the boys' side.

The Mount Greylock boys won with 28 points, holding off Lenox (33) by five points. Hoosac Valley and Wahconah tied with 52 points, and Amherst (92) and Berkshire School (94) rounded out the scoring teams.

The Greylock girls, meanwhile, took the team win with 15 points to Lenox's 26. Mohawk (67), Hoosac (78), Wahconah (82) and Amherst (136) rounded out the scoring teams.

Col McDermott raced to the win on the boys' side, winning in 16 minutes, 59 seconds. Hoosac's Justin Levesque was second (17:03), followed by Lenox duo JT Leger and Colin Young, and Hoosac's Corben Craig.

Jackie Wells took the individual win for the girls, with the Greylock racer coming across in 19:34. Lenox's Mary Elliot, Greylock duo Brandi Gill and Miriam Bakija, and Mohawk's Erika Looman rounded out the top five.

Boys Basketball

Mount Greylock 66, Murdock 64

WINCHENDON — The Mount Greylock starting five came through on a road trip to Murdock.

Led by senior Toby Foehl's 24 points on six made 3-pointers, the Mounties got all their points from starters, countering a long-range barrage from the home team.

Murdock rained down 11, 3-pointers, and led throughout the opening two quarters, before Liam Brady got going in the third quarter. The senior big scored nine of his 17 point in the third, and Greylock exited the frame up 51-49.

Derek Paris added 15 points for the Mounties (5-3).

NORTH ADAMS — Arianna Vincent got the Hornets started, and Grace Towler and Izzy LaCasse carried them home.

McCann Tech (3-3) bounced back one night after a loss to Greenfield, out-pacing Pioneer Valley in the home gym.

Vincent scored four points in the first quarter to set the hosts up, before Towler racked up 18 points and LaCasse tacked on 13 to power through the finish line.

"Tonight was a nice turnaround after a tough loss to a strong Greenfield team," wrote coach Kathy Budaj in an email. "We started off slow but the second part of the first quarter we started to click. The girls did a nice job of penetrating which led to some nice buckets."
