Holiday cookie of the week: M&Ms Christmas Cookies


We know, we know. The turkey is barely out of the oven and we're already talking about the holiday baking season, but can one start thinking about holiday cookie platters too soon? We agree — no, it's never too soon!

This season we'll be providing you with a cookie recipe every week leading up to Christmas — that's five recipes worthy of gifting your neighbors, keeping on hand for holiday visitors, or even putting on Santa's cookie tray (hey, it's important to to keep jolly Ol' Saint Nick in your good graces).

We'll kick things off with a recipe from our calendar editor Meggie Baker. These M&M cookies are simple to make, yet festive and delicious. Meggie also points out that these are fun for kids to help make, too.

M&Ms Christmas Cookies


1/2 cup and 1 tbs. softened butter

1/8 cup shortening

1/2 cup, slightly heaping, sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

1 egg

2 cups flour, slightly heaping

1 tsp. baking soda

1/4 tsp. salt

1 cup red and green M&Ms


Heat oven to 375 degrees. Whisk flour, baking soda and salt together and set aside. Beat butter, shortening, sugars, vanilla and egg until smooth. Add dry ingredients. Stir in M&Ms candies (and chocolate chips, nuts, sprinkles — whatever you like!) Bake for 10 minutes.
