Hoosac Valley girls soccer team advances in Western Mass. D-III tournament with OT win

Posted

NORTH ADAMS — The Hoosac Valley girls soccer team finished the regular season with seven ties, the most of any team in Berkshire County. On Tuesday, those Hurricanes found themselves in a familiar predicament in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division III tournament, but the outcome was much different.

Sydni Jamros kept No. 8 Hoosac's championship hopes alive on a walk-off goal with just one minute remaining in the first overtime to take a 2-1 win over No. 9 Palmer at MCLA's Shewcraft Field.

"We tie a lot of games," Jamros said post game. "We knew we had to come back and do something."

The Hurricanes found success pushing the ball to Kayley Winn on the outside, who would put the ball up for grabs over the middle.

"We had chances," Hoosac Valley coach Kathy Budaj said. "Some went over and others went wide."

It didn't stop the Hurricanes from sending the ball back to Winn. The sophomore forward shot out of a cannon to claim the loose ball like she had done throughout the night. This time was different. Jamros jumped behind defenders and pushed the ball past the Palmer keeper.

"They realized we can't tie in the playoffs," Budaj joked. "We had plenty of opportunities and we needed to figure out how to capitalize. We talked about things we saw with their defense and that was the type of ball that needed to be played."

Hoosac Valley's defense was stout for most of the night, as the Hurricanes led 1-0 for almost all of the second half. However, a logjam in front of the Hurricane net resulted on an unassisted goal from Palmer's Olivia Coughlin with roughly ten minutes left in regular time.

"I felt like we were playing a strong game," Jamros said. "That goal was pretty heartbreaking. We had [the game] and then it was gone. Coach told us to not let the goal ruin how we were playing."

The Hurricanes controlled the ball for most of the night with the help of midfielders Shaleigh Levesque and Riley Robinson. In fact, Levesque did it all on her own for the first goal of the evening. The senior drew a foul that positioned a free kick.

Levesque went for it all and nailed the top shelf to give Hoosac a 1-0 lead just minutes into the second half.

A tough challenge is on the horizon for the Hurricanes. Next up is a top-seeded South Hadley team that has lost just once in the last two seasons.

"We have a tough road ahead with undefeated South Hadley and the girls are pumped," Budaj said. "[South Hadley] lost like one game in the last two years so they'll be a tough team and we'll bring our 'A' game."

The date and time of the D-III quarterfinal bout was unavailable at press deadline.
